Särmäharju, an independent transport company, looked to Piako to build a hooklift vehicle that can occasionally be used as a loading crane. Installing the crane on the bed would not suit their needs because the crane needed to work with the different interchangeable beds. In addition to the engineering challenge, the truck’s exterior appearance needed to stand out and wow the general public because Särmäharju’s key players are avid truck show enthusiasts.
The shared creativity and cooperation between Särmäharju and Piako has always worked out well. Communication between the companies is relaxed and uncomplicated. Särmäharju’s design wishes are discussed openly and directly with Piako’s product development team which is vital to their desired outcome. What’s more, Särmäharju is a very knowledgeable customer. They have 19 years of experience with hooklift vehicles so they knew exactly what they wanted. And during those 19 years, Piako has obligingly fulfilled Särmäharju’s creative requests many times.
Piako designed and built the vehicle with interchangeable hooklift beds and a snap-on crane. The hooklift has an automatic slide limiter which enables the utilization of longer interchangeable beds when the crane is not attached to the vehicle. Removing and attaching the crane takes only about ten minutes so it can be added easily whenever it’s desired.
In the end, the vehicle’s design proved to be extremely versatile. It also has a high utilization rate. The crane easily handles heavy loads, and it obviously frees up the platform space when it’s not needed. The vehicle was everything Särmäharju had hoped for, and it has earned impressive accolades at numerous truck shows.
For decades Piako has demonstrated that it has remarkable and effective product development capabilities. Särmäharju Ky was familiar with Piako’s strong product development department, where different individuals utilize their own unique creative and engineering expertise. Which was helpful because in addition to mechanical design, the project also required electrical and hydraulic engineering know-how.
